Saturday’s Schools Out Radio Club

About Us

Every Saturday morning we hold our Schools Out Radio Club for young people aged 8-18, here the youngsters learn and take part in everything radio; presenting, producing and planning radio shows, production work, news and journalism, researching and promoting exciting projects and even achieving accredited qualifications in the form of Arts Awards which we start at entry level all the way up to gold (level 3).

Our training has been so succussful its earned us radio awards, volunteer awards and the Princess Royal Training Award presented to us by Princess Anne herself.

Our young presenters produce fantastic LIVE content every week from the music to guest interviews and fun talk topics, they also record a monthly Podcast centred around Sheppey FM’s War on Waste project, these they reseach, write and record independently, they call this “The Youth Show Going Green.”

What We Do

Radio Shows

Our Youth Presenters are live on air Saturday Mornings 9am-12pm each show is different and they take it in turns on the hot seat. They also take your requests.

Production

The young people learn how to produce their own professional standard jingles, how to make adverts and pre-recorded content, using our production software.

Arts Awards

We are a registereed training centre for Arts Awards and all of our young people have the opportunity to achieve an accredited nationally recognised qualification upto level 3 in the arts.

War On Waste

Our youth presenters are very involved with our “War on Waste” project doing beach cleans and litter picks, environmental segments and tips in their live shows and even going green with their monthly environmental podcasts.

War On Waste and The Youth Show Going Green Podcasts

The youth show have been upholding Sheppey FM’s War on Waste project by having a dedicated environmental segment every show, giving tips such as investing in a wooden toothbrush or reusable water bottles, fun facts, advice and playing environmental songs. They use the platform on the radio to promote environmental issues and local services such as recycling points, Sheppey FM is a recycling point for batteries and ink cartridges, we also reguarly collect things like bottle tops and crisp packets. Our young presenters take part in many litter picks and beach cleans, they even document their results.

As our studio is also the Tourist Information Centre, some of our youth team created posters for us to display to the public some of these are posted below. Our latest project tied into War on Waste is the Youth Show Going Green Podcasts, these podcasts are made monthly and are posted on our YouTube page, here, and on our social media pages, the podcasts are entirely reseached, written and produced by our young people making them all the more special.

Our Interviews & On-Air Guests

Our youth team are trained in how to conduct interviews, prepare questions, ensure guests are comfortable and at ease and they always research and prepare, although at times they have had impromptu guests and still coped extremely well. Past guests have included Ray Featherstone founder and leader of Sheerness County Youth Club, Sheppey Pet Angels, Mr Villz local grime artist, St George’s Primary School, Lee Ewart charity fundraiser, Councillor Elliot Jayes, Local PCSOs, The Mayor of Swale and many more. Guests always leave smiling and happy that they were treated professionally and politely, in many cases they have returened for updates too!
