Helen Vieru from Sheppey Matters came in today to discuss how they are taking part in Race Equality Week which runs from 2nd-8th February. This is organised by the charity Race Equality Matters and the theme this year is “Change Needs All of Us.” They are joining thousands of organisations, taking part across the country. Sheppey Matters staff are taking part in activities each day, which include learning about Unconscious Bias, what it means to be anti-racist, and setting goals for the charity. Helen and Ray discussed what people can do in their everyday lives to support Race Equality. They wholeheartedly agreed that making efforts to listen and learn is something that everyone can do. They talked about Unconscious Bias and how sometimes we make generalisations and stereotypes based on our experiences, the media, and the world around us. Helen encouraged people to do something outside of their comfort zone; whether that is reading an article, watching a video, or even attending an event that they wouldn’t usually think of. They recognised that anti-racism is a process and that Sheppey Matters is committed to learning more and being better. Helen and Ray discussed that no matter where you are in your journey learning about anti-racism, having an open mind and good intentions is an excellent place to start. If you would like to know more about what we’re doing here at Sheppey Matters, please do contact the office on 01795 585335 or Office@sheppeymatters.org.uk.If you want to learn more about Race Equality Matters and Race Equality Week, please visit www.raceequalitymatters.com. ... Whilst at the studio he done an on air interview with the young presenters answering listener questions and some interesting questions from the youngsters too, topics included; support for farmers and the inheritance tax, environmental issues and the look of the streets, disabled transport at the local hospital and social media bans for children. On Air This Week: Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support Service (ADSS)On Wednesday, we were joined in the Sheppey FM studio by Sarah and Jane from ADSS – the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support Service, who shared an inspiring and heartfelt look into the work they do across our community. They spoke about the vital support ADSS provides following a dementia diagnosis — not just for those living with the condition, but for families who often feel unsure where to turn. Jane also opened up about her own personal journey caring for her mother, who lives with dementia. She shared a touching moment from their visits to the ADSS Tea & Dance group, where her mum “comes back”, remembering the songs she loved growing up and reconnecting with her daughter through music. It was a powerful reminder that music is therapy, and how it can spark memories, lift spirits, and support cognitive wellbeing for so many people affected by dementia.ADSS offers a wide range of free support, including:• Group activities and social sessions• Tea & dance events• Day trips and outings• Refreshments• Guidance after diagnosis and ongoing help for families• All of this at no cost to the service userThey’ve kindly left posters with us here at the station, and our presenters will be sharing details in the Community Events Guide to help spread the word.If you’re worried about a friend or family member showing signs of forgetfulness or confusion, Sarah and Jane encouraged everyone to speak to their GP, who can arrange a referral for assessment. You can find ADSS on Facebook or visit their website for more information: www.adss.org.ukA huge thank you to Sarah and Jane for joining us and for the incredible work they do for our community. ...
