Zoe welcomed into the studio Drew from ‘Breakeven’ to discuss the fantastic services that he and his team provide to support individuals and their families with Gambling issues, Addiction, and sign posting to other services. Drew said “the charity started up because many of the team have lived experience of gambling and the effects it has on the individual, the family and friends trying to support them through this. Drew shared that the CEO of ‘Breakeven’ had problems with addiction which led him to setting up breakeven”Drew spoke about how gambling can affect young people without them realising, as much of the younger generation’s communications are online and they can be spending money on video games and card games which pull them into giving card details and adding cookies, which will keep showing them ads related to gambling, this becomes a vicious cycle. Neurodiverse children and young people are more likely to be drawn into this situation. He advised to please check your child's online activity and put locks on their Internet settings where possible for their own protection. Websites don't always have age restrictions and there are more sites being developed which are targeted at vulnerable people every day, and when you are a gambling addict this makes you more susceptible. Drew explained that ‘Breakeven’ have an extensive treatment package for recovery which includes individual counselling sessions either online or face to face if needed. Breakeven run many support groups, including the WINGS group, just for females affected by gambling and family members who are female and female ex gamblers, who share their journey as they continue their recovery, and the Green Shoots Recovery course to refresh after being a gambling addict. Furthermore, Breakeven run short courses to help organisations to support workers and staff with gambling issues and a Level 2 Accredited course called ‘Bet you can help’ for Professionals as this is a full-time training course over a few days. Breakeven can also signpost you to other services to help with the many other issues associated to the gambling addiction, such as financial support, mental health support, and family counselling and health care professionals. If you are struggling with gambling or supporting a friend or family member with a gambling addiction or are an ex-gambler and you have relapsed please contact Breakeven for support on their website www.breakeven.org.uk and fill in the referral form online, or you can email them on info@breakeven.org.uk or call them on 01273 833722 ... John Nurden, who co-chairs the Island Forum, visited Sheppey FM on Monday to drum up support to find a town crier for the Isle of Sheppey. He told presenter Ray Seager that he was looking for someone to become the face - and voice - of the first month-long Festival of Sheppey this June.Auditions will be held on Valentine's Day, this Saturday (February 14) from 10am at the Criterion Blue Town, before a panel of judges.John said: "We need someone to shout about Sheppey from the rooftops. As well as having a powerful voice they should be passionate about the Island and know a little about its amazing history."He then eyed Ray and added: "I think Ray would be perfect."The competition is open to men or women. Those taking part should take a short script with them.It has not been decided what the new volunteer town crier will wear but it could be distinctly Sheppey. Ray suggested it could include a piratical costume based on the Sheppey Pirates.John thought it would be fun to dress up as a sheep - although not in hot weather. For more details email organiser Jenny Hurkett at jhcriterionbluetown@outlook.comJohn Nurden Mobile: 07831 486436 ...
